The low Income Stereotypes

There are a lot of different stereotypes that a person who does not make very much money has got to contend with.  Among these stereotypes are the notion that all poor people are naturally very lazy, that they have no goals for their own futures, and that they will do nothing more productive than filling out whatever paperwork that they have to in order to get some manner of hand out from whomever will offer one to them.  Naturally, there are plenty of people who blow very big holes in this set of stereotypes every day.

For one thing, there are an awful lot of poor people who work very hard on a regular basis, whether they have a disability or not.  There are plenty of mothers who walk to the bus stop before the Sun has come up in the morning, having already gotten their kids ready for school, so that they can work a ten hour shift and come home to make sure their kids did their chores, did their homework and brushed their teeth.  If these individuals are not poor, it is because they have gotten themselves out of it.  And in most cases, with a few lean years under their belts, that is precisely what they end up doing.

For another thing, there are plenty of people who have never applied for any sort of government assistance.  For a lot of people, it never even occurs to them that they could be drawing on any sort of disability pay, or any other help that they do not really need to receive.  For a person who has a solid work ethic, hand outs just get in the way of making real progress.
